Budget First – Everything Else Comes After

The first thing you need to do is to create a budget for the renovation. Do this well ahead of the time you want to actually start the project as what you will be able to accomplish depends largely on the amount of time and money you’re willing to spend on this project. A well thought out budget can act as a frame that will help you keep on top of every step of the renovation and remodel.

Your financial plan is your guideline that will determine how the various aspects of the project will play out starting with the initial design, the layout and even the materials used. Keep in mind that the timeframe in which your renovation can be completed will also often depend on the budget.

Create Your Own Look

The next step is one of the most fun in the whole process. You need to decide what you want your new bathroom to look like! You can go for a new and improved version of your previous look or you can go in a whole other direction. There is plenty of style inspiration to be found both in home improvement magazines and on various online platforms. Put together a scrapbook of your favorite looks and features and compare their prices so you can create a cohesive look that will also fit in your budget.

While you’re choosing the general look and style of your bathroom keep in mind that the materials you choose also need to fit into your plans. They should accommodate not only your style and budget, but your time constraints as well. If you’re using porcelain you don’t need to worry too much about this as it is a relatively maintenance-free product, however stone surfaces need to be sealed, and if you’re using specially sourced or artisanal materials you need to leave yourself enough time and money to procure them. Ideally, you should have all of the necessary materials on hand before beginning the renovation.

Plan Everything – Big and Small

If your main reason for wanting a bathroom renovation is to add a certain unique feature then you will need to plan the rest of the tasks around that. Custom designs and new features take a lot of time and planning so you need to bring it up at the very beginning so that the layout and timing of the rest of the project can be planned and fitted accordingly.

No detail is too small when it comes to creating the overall look of your bathroom.  The faucets and other hardware may seem to have an insignificant impact when compared to your bathroom tile or larger pieces such as a bath, but don’t be fooled – they can make or break your bathroom’s appearance. Outdates designs or materials can overshadow all the updates you’ve made, while choosing the right ones and adding an appropriate polish can really tie the whole bathroom together. Do your research and if possible come up with more than one alternative that would suit both your style and budget.
